Equipment

The photographs available on this website were created using a Canon 1DS Mark II 16.7 Megapixel Pro Digital SLR camera. This is a very rugged, heavy duty and full featured high resolution camera that is ideally suited for the recording of detailed outdoor images.

Canon 1Ds Mark II camera

Canon's 16.7 megapixel full frame CMOS sensor captures the necessary pixels needed to produce image files large enough for poster-size fine art nature photography prints. It is capable of shooting up to 4 frames per second, which is useful in wildlife photography and sports photography. The image processor produces precise, natural colors with smooth, lifelike gradations, which helps to provide more realistic landscape photography images. The processor also contributes to lower power consumption, making possible longer sessions with the high number of shots needed in sports photography and wildlife photography.

The lenses used include the following:

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM lens

Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM lens

Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 macro lens

Canon Extender EF 1.4x II

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM lens

Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM lens

The 24-70mm is a versatile landscape photography lens. The 50mm lens can provide excellent detail and resolution needed for some nature photography. The 100mm can also provide excellent resolution and functions both as a macro and short telephoto lens for wildlife photography. The 70-200mm lens is usefull in composing and cropping the image in the field in landscape photography. The 400mm lens, with or without the 1.4x extender, proves to be a relatively light telephoto for use in wildlife photography.

Flashes, if used, include the following:

Canon Speedlite 550EX Flash

Canon Speedlite 420EX Flash

Canon Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX Flash

The speedlight flashes can prove useful as fill lighting in some nature photograhpy, wildlife photography, or landscape photography images. The macro ring flash is often necessary to provide enough light in close-up nature photography to give good depth of field.

The tripod and tripod heads used are as follows:

Gitzo G1325 Carbon Fiber Tripod

Acratech Ballhead

Black Widow Gimbal Head

The Gitzo carbon fiber tripod is very strong and sturdy, but also relatively light, which is appreciated on backcountry treks for nature photography and wildlife photography. The Acratech ballhead is very adjustable and light, well suited for landscape photography. The Black Widow Gimbal tripod head provides a stable and very maneuverable platform for long lenses in wildlife photography and sports photography.
